Volvo EX40

Volvo EX40

The Volvo EX40 is a fully electric compact SUV that shares its underpinnings with the new EX30 and the existing XC40 Recharge. However, it sets itself apart with a fresh identity focused purely on electrification and a more connected, software-driven user experience. It’s part of Volvo’s plan to become a fully electric car brand by 2030.

Volvo EX40 Design:

The EX40’s design is distinctly Scandinavian, clean, minimalist, yet confidently bold. At the front, the SUV sports a clean grille-less fascia typical of EVs, flanked by the signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights.

Recycled and renewable materials are extensively used throughout the cabin, from carpets made of recycled fishing nets to eco-friendly upholstery options.

Key Design Highlights:

  • LED lighting with a distinctive signature
  • Recycled materials in interior trims
  • Sleek 19–20 inch aerodynamic alloy wheels
  • Panoramic sunroof for a bright, spacious feel

Performance & Range:

Under the hood, or rather under the floor, the Volvo EX40 is equipped with an advanced electric powertrain. The EX40 is expected to offer two powertrain choices: a single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant.

Expected Powertrain Specs:

  • Single Motor: Produces 238 hp and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 7.3 seconds
  • Dual Motor AWD: 408 hp, 0–100 km/h in ~4.7 seconds
  • Battery Capacity: Around 69 to 82 kWh
  • Range (WLTP): Delivers a range of up to 500 km on a single charge

These figures make the EX40 not just a practical daily commuter, but also a fun-to-drive SUV capable of long-distance highway travel.

Charging Options:

Volvo has ensured that charging the EX40 is as effortless as driving it. The SUV is compatible with both AC and DC charging options:

  • AC home charging at 11 kW takes approximately 8 to 9 hours for a full charge
  • DC Fast Charging (up to 150 kW): 10–80% in ~30 minutes

Interior & Features:

Inside, the Volvo EX40 offers a calming, clutter-free space with top-quality materials and intelligent tech integration. The dashboard features a vertical touchscreen infotainment system running on Google’s Android Automotive OS, offering built-in Google Maps, Assistant, and Play Store support.

A fully digital instrument cluster complements the infotainment system, while the voice assistant ensures minimal distractions. The cabin features a smart, driver-centric layout with generous space for both passengers and cargo.

Interior Features:

  • 9-inch Android-powered infotainment touchscreen
  • 12.3-inch digital driver display
  • Harman Kardon premium sound system
  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Over-the-air (OTA) software updates
  • Vegan upholstery and sustainable trim materials
  • Advanced climate control with an air purifier

ADAS and Safety:

Safety is where Volvo truly shines, and the EX40 carries forward that legacy. The SUV is anticipated to feature a comprehensive range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Pilot Assist (semi-autonomous driving)
  • 360-degree camera and parking assist
  • Collision Avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection
